King Street Gallery on William

Rachel Ellis

Rachel Ellis studied at City Art Institute (now UNSW Art & Design) in Sydney and was later awarded the Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship in 1997, which enabled her to study works of art in museums and galleries throughout Europe and the UK.
She undertook a three-month residency at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris and participated in a Summer School at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. While working as an au pair in Italy, some years earlier, she attended life drawing classes at the International School of Art in Umbria, taught by artist Nicholas Carone, a founding member of the New York Studio School. These encounters were formative.
Rachel responds primarily from life to her immediate urban rural environment of Bathurst, where she has lived since 2001, but also it’s surrounds in central west NSW.  ‘Rachel’s is largely an internalised vision of observable reality, heightened by spiritual belief, yet readily shareable and hence universal’ Hendrik Kolenberg, former Senior Curator of Prints Drawings and Watercolours at the AGNSW.

For Rachel, drawing and painting is about light and the relationships it reveals, beyond what we see in front of us.  She values the observation of Bathurst architect Tony McBurney: ‘In human perception, light has the power to form and to dissolve and in this, we see the power of the creator’.  For Rachel, ‘To draw and paint light is to confront the reality of what it is to be alive!’

Rachel’s work can be found in collections such as the Art Gallery of New South Wales, NSW Parliament House, Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, St Patrick’s Cathedral, Parramatta and Macquarie Bank.
