Hirschmann’s current exhibition features paintings, sculptures and chain saw drawings. The drawings are a very direct and intuitive medium that interpret a decade long exploration into the upturned local tree roots from North East, Victoria; the effect of an environment harassed by drought, flood and fire.
The 18mm form ply takes on a sculptural quality when the chainsaw removes the skin, exposing the layers of laminated wood beneath- an irreversible process. The external interpretation of the local tree roots becomes an internal search of mortality with the tragic loss of special people in 2013 and the ailing health of the artist’s father.
