In The art that made me, people discuss works in the Art Gallery of New South Wales collection that either inspire, influence or simply delight them.
Working prolifically across painting, performance, installation, drawing and sculpture, Jumaadi is never short of ideas or the desire to share stories.
Born in East Java, Indonesia, he moved to Sydney in 1997 to study at the National Art School. For many years he has travelled between Sydney and Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and this mobility has influenced his work, as he favours materials that are portable – paper for watercolours, cut-outs, gouaches; cloth or buffalo hide that can be rolled and put in a tube.
‘A lot of it is dictated by intuition and my body; by moving places and moving studios – it is experiential,’ he says. ‘The work is informed by my physical experience – temperature, weather – and by the people around me. It’s not a direct transcription of the world. It’s not like plein air paintings. It’s more about intuition and emotion – about love, displacement, fear, longing, embrace or parting.’ – Excerpt from the online article, read more via the link below.
