American born and UK educated, Adriane Strampp has been living and working in Australia for over 30 years.
Strampp completed a BA in Fine Art at Prahran College (1983) and an MFA (by Research) at Monash University (2010), and has held 30 solo exhibitions as well as participating in many group shows. She has been short-listed multiple times for the Sulman, Geelong Contemporary, Paul Guest, John Leslie, McGivern, Möet & Chandon and Tattersalls prizes, as well as being a finalist in many others, including the Len Fox, Glover, Adelaide Perry, Hutchins and City of Hobart Works on Paper prizes.
Her work is held in public collections, including Maitland Regional Art Gallery, NSW (2019), City of Yarra, Victoria (2011), Kedumba Collection (2010), Hamilton Regional Gallery (1993), Nillumbik Shire (1988), Artbank and Macquarie University. In 2016 Strampp was awarded a Hill End residency through Bathurst Regional Art Gallery and in 2011 was a Zoo AIR Artist in residence at Taronga Zoo.
Drawn to finding connections from a fragmented past to the present, Strampp gathers imagery from across time to create scenes that are imbued with both personal meaning and collective familiarity. Whilst landscape — as a vehicle for exploring places and moments remembered — remains a recurring subject in Strampp’s work, her interest lies not in its mimetic representation, but in its suggestion of an elusive and unreachable presence. Hers is the emotional journey of a landscape remembered, and the search for the familiar that helps us connect with the past.
Adriane’s 2022 solo exhibition at King Street Gallery, ‘In the Stillness’, was created during Melbourne’s austere lockdowns. Adriane was restricted to her Collingwood home for months at a time, separated from her studio in Fitzroy. In this forced stillness, she created a new series of work that turned toward the subject of the domestic interior as a site for contemplation, studying the light changing through the seasons, and night light reflections on restless nights.
King Street Gallery has represented Adriane since 2010. She currently lives and works in Melbourne, Victoria.
