Adriane Strampp

American born and UK educated, Adriane Strampp has been living and working in Australia for over 30 years.

Strampp completed a BA in Fine Art at Prahran College (1983) and an MFA (by Research) at Monash University (2010), and has held 30 solo exhibitions as well as participating in many group shows. She has been short-listed multiple times for the Sulman, Geelong Contemporary, Paul Guest, John Leslie, McGivern, Möet & Chandon and Tattersalls prizes, as well as being a finalist in many others, including the Len Fox, Glover, Adelaide Perry, Hutchins and City of Hobart Works on Paper Prize.

Her work is held in public collections, Maitland Regional Art Gallery, NSW (2019), City of Yarra, Victoria (2011), Kedumba Collection (2010), Hamilton Regional Gallery (1993), Nillumbik Shire (1988) Artbank, and Macquarie University. In 2016 Strampp was awarded a Hill End residency through the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery and in 2011 was a Zoo AIR Artist in residence at Taronga Zoo.

Drawn to finding connections from a peripatetic past to the now, Strampp gathers imagery from her past and present to create scenes that are both personally meaningful yet also hold a collective sense of familiarity. Whilst the landscape has been a recurring subject in her work, not in the traditional art historical sense, but rather as a continuing exploration of places or moments remembered, interest is not in the mimetic representation of landscape, but rather the suggestion of presence or position of the viewer observing, present yet separated from that which he sees. Hers is the emotional journey of a landscape remembered, the search for familiarity and triggers that help us connect the past with the present.

King Street Gallery has represented Adriane since 2010. She currently lives and works in Melbourne, Victoria.
