Genevieve Carroll was born in 1960 and graduated from the National Art School with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2004. She was the recipient of the Tim Storrier and Annette Onslow Cite International des Arts Paris Residency in 2007.
Genevieve exhibited works at Orange Regional Art Gallery in a solo show, ‘The Wattle Room Chapter 11 oysters and buttered bread’, from 2 February till the 2 April, 2024. She has an upcoming solo exhibition at King Street Gallery in July 2024, ‘The Wattle Room – Chapter 12 – Hill End: The most curious landscape’.
“The Wattle Room is my diary, with the written words expressed as exhibition chapters. I collage my feelings, dislocated fragments trying to reconcile appearing comic. I step off my great love of 20th-century poetry and literature with a fascination for the absurd, which is the foundation of my paintings. I express in optimistic bright colours and exaggerate the repetitive motifs to create a humorous Vanitas concept, making up my own symbols as reminders of how to live my life.”
– Genevieve Carroll [excerpt from exhibition catalogue essay, 2024]
Genevieve’s works were exhibited in a group exhibition, ‘Aliferous: Having Wings’, at King Street Gallery during September 2023, with Angela Malone, Adriane Strampp and David Pearce. She also exhibited in a group show ‘West of Central’, at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery in 2023.
She was awarded the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery Portraiture Prize in 2010, the Cowra Regional Art Gallery Award in 2012 and the Central West Regional Artists Award in 2014. Her work is held by the Australian National Library, Canberra and the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, Bathurst.
“…I love to explore ideas of the ongoing struggle and complex relationships between two powers, that of the natural world and humanity, using every day and found objects and creating them into colourful abstract compositions. I love to combine colourful interiors with exterior landscapes, as this way of working becomes a metaphor to represent humankind in the natural world.” – Genevieve Carroll
