Figurative painter James Jones was born in Goulburn, NSW in 1963. James graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Philosophy Major), from Macquarie University in 1986, and then again with a Diploma of Art (Painting) from the National Art School in 1990. In 1994, James was awarded an artist residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.
James has exhibited work regularly since 1990, with nine solo exhibitions at King Street since joining the gallery in 2000. His paintings have been included in many prominent Australian prizes including the Gruner Art Prize for Landscape Painting at AGNSW, the Winsor & Newton Australian Art Prize, and the NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting Prize. Most recently, James has been selected as a finalist in the Korean-Australian Art Foundation Award, with a concurrent exhibition in 2020.
Also, his paintings feature in numerous institutional collections such as the Allens Collection, Macquarie Bank, Sydney, News Corporation Australia and Winsor & Newton, UK.
James’ work is rendered in lyrical abstraction that looks to the Australian urban and rural landscape for inspiration. He also draws creativity from the folly of contemporary society.
James currently lives and works in Sydney.
