King Street Gallery on William

Euan Macleod | GLACIER, S.H. Ervin Gallery, 8 Nov – 14 Dec, 2025

November 6, 2025

King Street Gallery on William is pleased to share Euan Macleod’s upcoming solo exhibition Glacier at S.H. Ervin Gallery, Sydney. This exhibition will commence November 8, and will be on display until December 14, 2025.

From S.H. Ervin Gallery, National Trust:

Euan Macleod has continuously visited the Haupapa Tasman Glacier on Te Waipounamu, New Zealand’s South Island for over fifty years. It is his ongoing intrigue and attraction to its terrain that has inspired this exhibition.

Embracing the European tradition of the romantic sublime and reflecting on the legacy of J. M. W. Turner, Caspar David Friedrich and Eugene von Guerard, Macleod celebrates its sublime majesty but also expresses vulnerability and fragility of both mountain and man. These enigmatic works challenge the notion of the romantic sublime; the figure is not simply diminutive and in awe of the landscape but also threatens – the dark figures creating nature’s doom, destroying the ground that they walk on. The contemporary reality of climate change is evident in the change to the glacier and whilst we appreciate its magnificent beauty the need to avert the impending tragedy is urgent.
