I generally make small paintings like these at the start of a new body of work. They are often the catalyst for larger works and play an important role in my practice. Sometimes they happen after making larger works, and are a refinement or reflection of certain aspects of a painting I enjoyed. These paintings were all made during lockdown and they helped draw my focus away from the daily news and concentrate on something I had more control over, something more hopeful.
