King Street Gallery on William

Martin King

The Long Crossing

6 February - 3 March 2007

King Street Gallery offers us the results of Martin King’s recent expedition to the Antarctic. He spent a month on the round trip with, amongst others, filmmaker Jay Watson who has made a six minute doco on the trip that accompanies the exhibition.

Martin King is best known as the master printmaker at the Victorian Print Workshop who usually shows large scale etchings drawn from observations made while flying at low altitude over the Australian outback.

However he has returned from the Antarctic with birds as his motif and viewers can feel the sense of freedom as the artist revels in his newfound subject. The quality of the prints is of course masterly; they have a pensive patience to them and a delicate discipline as they stick like glue to their original inspiration.
