King Street Gallery on William is thrilled to announce Lucy Culliton as the 2024 winner of the coveted Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award!
The winning entry by Bibbenluke based artist, titled ‘Support Crew’ presents a lovingly depicted portrait of her partner Jamie and their dogs, and will take home the coveted $50,000 non-acquisitive prize.
The artist said of her subjects, “The dogs are with me all the time. In the studio sleeping while I paint or in the garden sleeping while I weed. Jamie comes home in the evening and always asks how I got on with my day.”
Jude Rae, co-Judge of this year’s Award, said of the winning entry “It is a complex and sophisticated composition and it could be argued that it gently prods the genre of portraiture by raising the very current topic of non-human subjectivity.”
