Tom’s artist statements:
Purple Cabbage, 2025:
‘There’s a Japanese lady with a stall at our local Farmers’ Market who counts your money using an abacus. She doesn’t have a great variety of fruit and vegetables but what’s there is all grown by her and is always good. I saw this quartered purple cabbage on her display a month ago and had to paint it. I cooked it later in a chicken and veg curry.’
Broccoli, 2025:
‘I eat broccoli with most of my meals but two months ago was the first time I had painted some. During the August Sydney deluge I placed a head of it on a white wooden plank on the floor in the light from a downstairs window. It looked a bit like a felled tree. I went on to do four broccoli paintings and this one was my favourite.’
