On ‘Sanctuary: 25 Years of Hazelhurst Arts Centre’:

The title of the exhibition comes from the name former Hazelhurst resident Ben Broadhurst gave to the small building at the back of his property which he used as a spiritualist retreat for reading and meditation. It is on this location that Hazelhurst now stands.

Ideas of retreat, respite and contemplation are central to the exhibition as is the idea of the gallery as a space apart. In their 1989 publication The Good Place, US Sociologists Ray Oldenburg and Karen Christensen coined the term ‘Third Places’ to describe social spaces outside of the home or work-place. Oldenburg and Christensen write that Third Places are open, inviting and convenient. They are places for conversation, discussion, debate, laughter and joy.

These spaces, like Hazelhurst Arts Centre were hard-won by forward-thinking artists and organisers and Sanctuary is an acknowledgement and celebration of their foresight and vision.

Sanctuary: 25 Years of Hazelhurst Arts Centre was due to open on Saturday 3 May, 2025. Due to unforeseen circumstances the exhibition will now open on Thursday 8 May. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding.
