Euan Macleod was born in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1956. He was awarded a Diploma of Fine Arts (Painting) by the Ilam School of Fine Arts, Canterbury University, in 1979, before moving to Sydney in 1981. He has held more than 100 solo shows in New Zealand and Australia.
Macleod’s 2024 solo exhibition ‘Flux’, at Orange Regional Gallery, features a series of en plain air paintings made on Haupapa Tasman Glacier in New Zealand’s South Island, alongside a suite of studio works whose grand scale emulates their site of inspiration. Macleod’s solo exhibition ‘The Zoo: Part 1’, at King Street Gallery 2024, was developed in response to his time as Artist in Residence at Dubbo Zoo. “Macleod’s works are concerned with the animals’ point of view from their imprisoned existence within the zoo compound, and from observing humans in the fabricated wild.” (Rodney Pople, 2024)
In 2023 Euan exhibited a suite of works in a solo exhibition, ‘Summit Road’, at King Street Gallery featuring works with the recurring subject of his mother, old age and frailty contrasting dramatically with the harsh and craggy landscapes of Christchurch, New Zealand.
Surface Tension: the art of Euan Macleod 1991-2009, a Tweed River Art Gallery Touring exhibition, curated by Gavin Wilson, toured six regional Australian galleries, beginning at S.H. Ervin Gallery, Sydney, in November 2010. The touring exhibition, Euan Macleod: Painter, curated by Gregory O’Brien, travelled to several New Zealand regional galleries between 2014 and 2017.
In 2010 Piper Press, Sydney published a monograph, Euan Macleod: The Painter in the Painting, written by Gregory O’Brien. In 2019 Macleod collaborated on High Wire, a book of drawings and words, with Lloyd Jones, which was published in 2020.
Euan’s work is held in numerous public and private collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand, the Art Gallery of NSW, Orange Regional Art Gallery NSW, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and Parliament House, Canberra.
Euan has won many prestigious prizes including, The Archibald Prize 1999, The Sulman Prize 2001, The Blake Art Prize 2006, the NSW Parliament’s en Plein Air Painting Prize 2008, The Tattersall’s Landscape Prize 2000 & 2009, The Gallipoli Art Prize, 2009, and The King’s School Art Prize 2011. He won the Dobell Drawing Prize 2021.
“The very real temptation to write of Macleod’s work as portentous semiotics of environmental, cultural or psychic decline, or as confessional or autobiographical catharsis, is due to its overt but accessible use of symbolism.” (Jonathan McBurnie, ‘Summit Road’ catalogue essay, 2023)

Maria Stoljar visited Euan Macleod in his studio in the lead up to his solo show 'Swing/Bridge' which opened at Watters Gallery in Sydney on 5 September 2017. You can also hear Macleod talk about his life and art on the Talking with Painters podcast at talkingwithpainters.com, episode 11 or listen on iTunes or via your favourite podcast app. Video filmed and produced by Maria Stoljar - talkingwithpainters.com
Award-winning artist Euan Macleod talks with Maria Stoljar, host of the Talking with Painters podcast, about his recent work arising from his trip to China.
Euan MacLeod interviewed by the students of Callaghan College, Jesmond.
Discover the sublime and fragile ecosystem of Moreton Island through the texture of Macleod's work. Creating a world of richly-layered brush strokes, Macleod's work portrays both the restlessness and vulnerability of the human figure in his evocative landscapes.
'Salient: Contemporary artists at the Western Front' is a group exhibition which is travelling across Australia opening at the New England Regional Art Museum in March 2018. A group of twelve leading Australian artists travelled to Belgium and France to the First World War battlefields of the western front. Historian Brad Manera, who had previously travelled with many of the artists to Gallipoli, and artists Wendy Sharpe, Euan Macleod and Amanda Penrose Hart talked with Maria Stoljar about the exhibition. Details of the exhibition can be found at www.salientwesternfront.com.
The Drill Hall Gallery is currently exhibiting the works of 13 artists who were part of the Sydney gallerist Robert Linnegar's ambitious project. In 2013 and 2014 he organised for groups of artists from Australia and New Zealand to revisit the legendary sites of the Anzac expedition to Gallipoli. This exhibition portrays a landscape of tragic memory via the responses of 12 contemporary artists – Elisabeth Cummings, Idris Murphy, Euan Macleod, Guy Maestri, Steve Lopes, Deirdre Bean, Peter O’Doherty, Amanda Penrose Hart, Leo Robba, Luke Sciberras, Michael Shepherd, John Walsh and the filmmaker Bruce Inglis.
