Sculptor Harrie Fasher was born in Sydney, in 1977. Fasher graduated from the College of Fine Art with a Bachelor of Design in 2004, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in Sculpture from the National Art School in 2010. She undertook mentorships in bronze casting utilising the Sainsbury Sculpture Scholarship (2013) to study with Clara Hali (National Art School) and the Windmill Trust Scholarship (2015) to study with Laurence Edwards UK.
Fasher’s studio is located in Portland NSW, now housed in the workshops of the Foundation (formerly the Portland Cement Works). This heritage listed industrial site now sees production of large and small scale steel and bronze sculptures.
Fasher’s work, embodied by tension and movement, is renowned for its distinct raw language. Fasher utilises both abstraction and figurative form, predominately being the horse and more recently the human figure, to convey her message. The sculptures are three-dimensional drawings that elicit an emotional response from the viewer. The ‘mental and physical power of the horse’ is intrinsic to Fasher’s work and belies her history as an equestrian athlete. Her sculptures display an innate knowledge of the physical and gestural nuances of the horse, and the unique bond between horse and human.
Fasher has work in public and private collections both within Australia and internationally. She has received numerous scholarships and prizes including Rio Tinto’s major award at Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe, 2018. She has an extensive exhibition history, with works featured in just over 65 selective group exhibitions across Australia and internationally, including Sculpture by the Sea, Sydney and Cottesloe, WA, The Horse in Art, London and numerous regional gallery exhibits. Her work was also featured in the National Museum of Australia’s ‘Spirited: Australia’s Horse Story’, 2014.
Fasher’s work can be found in numerous collections both in Australia and internationally, including the National Museum of Australia, Canberra, National Art School, Sydney, Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, NSW and Orange Regional Art Gallery, NSW.
She currently lives and works in Portland, NSW.
