Ross Laurie’s paintings, like all memorable paintings, impress by their physical presence while appealing to the imagination. Criss-crossed by boundaries that seem to have only just settled after an exhaustive interrogation, the paintings bear the imprint of a personality who enjoys pushing against familiar pictorial structures to see what else they could contain and become. Laurie relishes pictorial composition for its traditions, for its rules (which may be bent), and for the profound meanings that we perceive in arrangements of form.
